The Five Stages of Waiting for a Lighthouse Score

There is a very specific kind of silence that happens in the seconds between clicking “Analyze page load” and the report actually rendering. It’s not long — a few seconds, tops — but it contains an entire emotional arc, and if you’ve run more than a handful of Lighthouse audits in your career, you already know exactly what we’re talking about.

Stage one: denial. You just shipped the fix. You tested it locally. It felt fast. You are, for these three or four seconds, a person who believes in things.

Stage two: bargaining. The spinner is still spinning. You start negotiating with an inanimate scoring tool. “It’s fine if the performance score dips a little, as long as accessibility holds.” You did not mean this.

Stage three: anger. The report loads. Performance: 61. You did something. You definitely did something. You open the diagnostics panel and start reading about “reduce unused JavaScript” with the specific fury of someone who has read that exact line eleven times this month.

Stage four: depression. You scroll down to Largest Contentful Paint and it’s pointing at the same hero image it’s been pointing at for two sprints. You know what the fix is. You have known what the fix is since the last audit.

Stage five: acceptance. You screenshot the score, post it in the team channel with a caption that’s 40% joke and 60% genuine distress, and open a ticket for next sprint, filed with the calm of someone who has made peace with the fact that performance work is never finished, only paused.

Then, weeks later, you run it again. And somehow, despite everything, the number goes up by three points, and for about ten minutes you feel like a genuinely competent professional. This feeling does not last. The next audit is already scheduled.

We built a shirt about the LCP threshold specifically because this cycle is universal enough to be a shared language across an entire profession. If you’ve felt all five stages inside a single loading spinner, you already know exactly which shirt in our shop was made for you.
