What Your Favorite HTTP Status Code Says About You

You don’t choose your favorite HTTP status code. It chooses you, usually during a formative debugging session sometime in your first two years of writing code. Here’s what yours says about you.

200 OK. You’re a person of simple pleasures. Something worked, the server said so plainly, and you moved on with your day.

204 No Content. You appreciate elegance. No bloated response body, no unnecessary confirmation. You probably own, or want to own, our plainest shirt.

301 Moved Permanently. You’ve been burned by a bad migration and you never fully recovered. You now over-communicate every change you make.

404 Not Found. You have a healthy relationship with failure. Things go missing sometimes. You don’t take it personally.

418 I’m a Teapot. You’re the person who reads RFCs for fun and brings up April Fools’ jokes from 1998 completely unprompted.

429 Too Many Requests. You’ve built or broken a rate limiter, possibly both, possibly in the same week.

500 Internal Server Error. You are honest to a fault. Something broke, you don’t fully know what yet, and you’re not going to pretend otherwise.

503 Service Unavailable. You believe in graceful degradation and telling people the truth: not broken, just temporarily overwhelmed, please try again shortly.

If you read this and immediately knew which one was yours without checking, that’s not a coincidence — that’s a personality. We’d love to put it on a shirt. A few of them already are.
