TTFB: A Love Story

Time To First Byte is not a glamorous metric. It doesn’t have the visual drama of a layout shift or the narrative arc of a full page load. It’s just the time between “I asked for something” and “the server said literally anything back.” And yet, if you’ve worked in performance for more than about six months, you develop a genuine emotional relationship with this number that borders on romantic.

It starts small. You notice a server responding in 80 milliseconds and you feel something. Not excitement, exactly — more like recognition. Someone, somewhere, configured this correctly. You don’t know them. You will never meet them. You respect them enormously.

It gets serious when you start noticing bad TTFB in the wild, unprompted, in contexts where nobody asked for your opinion. A shopping site takes 900 milliseconds just to start responding and you feel a physical reaction to it, the same one you get watching someone use a plastic fork on a steak.

The breakup, when it happens, is always the same: you finally get access to the backend of a site you’ve been quietly judging for months, expecting some fixable misconfiguration, and instead discover the real bottleneck is a database query so tangled that “slow” was actually the responsible outcome. You develop a grudging respect.

That’s why it made a shirt. Not because it’s flashy — because it’s honest, and because anyone who’s spent real time in this field knows exactly what it feels like to care this much about a number nobody outside the industry has ever heard of.
